Dr. Jiayu (Fiona) Shi is a board-certified orthodontist, researcher, and educator dedicated to combining advanced science with compassionate care. She completed her Orthodontics Residency and Ph.D. in Oral Biology at UCLA, where she was mentored by Dr. Won Moon, the inventor of the MSE (Maxillary Skeletal Expander).
As the founder of Emerald City Orthodontics – Kirkland – Braces & Invisalign, Dr. Shi provides personalized, technology-driven orthodontic care for children, teens, and adults. Her goal is to ensure every patient receives precise, efficient, and comfortable treatment—from simple alignment to complex interdisciplinary cases.
Dr. Shi comes from a family deeply rooted in dentistry. Her father is a world-renowned oral surgeon specializing in cleft lip and palate repair, and her mother is a general dentist. Both serve as professors at the West China School of Stomatology, inspiring Dr. Shi’s lifelong commitment to excellence in patient care.

Dr. Shi’s research bridges fundamental science and clinical innovation. Her studies at UCLA explored bone biology, airway structure, and skeletal expansion, influencing modern orthodontic treatment planning.
She has contributed to NASA- and NIH-supported projects on bone and cartilage regeneration and authored multiple peer-reviewed papers in high-impact journals.
Dr. Shi has published extensively on craniofacial development, orthodontic biomechanics, and bone biology, with a total of 33 publications. Her work has contributed to advancements in bone regeneration and airway-focused orthodontics, including research collaborations with NASA and leading dental institutions. In addition, Dr. Shi has been a presenter for 13 oral presentations and awards and 10 poster presentations & awards throughout her career.
Dr. Shi has been a reviewer for more than 70 peer-reviewed publications in oral science.

Dr. Hsin-Chuan (Dan) Pan is an accomplished orthodontist and educator who combines advanced clinical precision with a warm, patient-centered approach. With years of experience in complex orthodontic care and digital treatment planning, Dr. Pan provides high-quality, personalized orthodontics for patients of all ages at Emerald City Orthodontics – Kirkland – Braces & Invisalign.
He earned his orthodontic specialty and Master of Science in Oral Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he served as Chief Resident and contributed to multiple studies in craniofacial biology and biomechanics.
Dr. Pan completed his orthodontic residency and M.S. degree in Oral Biology at UCLA, one of the nation’s top orthodontic programs. As Chief Resident, he focused on digital orthodontic systems, biomechanics, and interdisciplinary case management.
Dr. Pan integrates both traditional and modern orthodontic systems, using the latest digital tools to enhance precision and comfort.
Before focusing on full-time clinical practice, Dr. Pan served as an Assistant Research Scientist at the UCLA Dental and Craniofacial Research Institute. His work contributed to a better understanding of skeletal biology, bone mass regulation, and craniofacial growth mechanisms.
